After being Managed by Canto Robledo, Gonzalez was managed by Francisco Espinoza.

Raul Gonzalez debuted as a professional on March 20, 1987, when he was 20 years old. The fight was against Timothy Mosley, in a contest that was a draw in the fourth round. Over the course of his amateur career, Gomzalez didn't have many fights.

Raul Gonzalez sparred with many great boxers like Oscar De La Hoya, Shane Mosley, Marcos Villasana and many more. Gonzalez did a cut on Villasana's nose during a sparring session preparation for the Champion Villasana,who would face Paul Hodkinson in United Kingdom. One of his trainer was Canto Robledo at Canto Robledo's Crown City Stables. Javier Capetillo also trained Gonzalez.
